MentorAbility
introduces job seekers to careers that interest them.
MentorAbility Canada is a national initiative that promotes the recruitment, employment, and retention of persons experiencing disability. The initiative provides networking and learning events and social media campaigns, but the core of the program is facilitating short-term (from 1 hour to 1 day) mentoring opportunities between employers and persons experiencing disability.
People are much more likely to find employment in a field they care about when they have contacts in that field, when they feel confident about their job search, and when they know what the expectations of that career are. MentorAbility provides these advantages—for free. It’s not a job—but it helps job seekers who are experiencing disability learn more about possible career paths, and introduces employers to a more diverse potential workforce.
The benefits are wide reaching.
JOB SEEKERS
Working with the MentorAbility team, you will be matched with an employer or mentor for a short mentoring experience. During this time, you will learn more about that employer’s workplace and different careers in their industry. You will be supported throughout the process by skilled employment professionals.
EMPLOYERS
Our team will facilitate mutually beneficial mentorship opportunities with a person interested in learning more about your industry. Encouraging your employees to participate can increase workplace diversity, strengthen workplace culture, and boost employee engagement. There is no expectation of a job offer.
SERVICE PROVIDERS
When you sign up to help facilitate mentoring experiences for your clients, you make a big impact in every client’s life. But you benefit too, since you’ll join an active and engaged community of practice, develop new employer engagement techniques and tools, and promote your work through the MentorAbIlity Canada network.

Sonja was interested in starting her own podcast—to review accessible technologies for persons with disabilities and interview the creators. So she was connected with Alex, an experienced podcaster. He taught Sonja some keys to a successful podcast, and offered useful advice on how to begin. Sonja loved that her MentorAbility experience made her feel more comfortable to take the leap.

Employers in provinces across Canada have brought DEAM to life by organizing activities to engage employers, job seekers experiencing disability, and the public to promote the benefits of inclusive hiring. Every day in October, we’ll celebrate the tremendous contributions persons who experience disability make to our workplaces and communities
